Beginner Snowboards

The right beginner snowboard should make learning easier without becoming something you outgrow after a few days on snow. Predictable turns, manageable flex and enough stability to build confidence matter far more than choosing the most technical board in the rack.

At Behind The Pines Amsterdam, we select snowboards for how they actually ride. Our beginner snowboard collection focuses on boards that are accessible enough for progression while still offering the performance to keep riding as your technique develops.

What makes a good beginner snowboard?

A beginner-friendly snowboard should help rather than fight you.

For most new riders, that means a board that is relatively easy to turn, predictable when moving from edge to edge and forgiving enough that small mistakes do not immediately result in a fall.

Flex plays an important role. Softer to medium-flex snowboards generally require less force to control than very stiff boards and can feel more manageable at lower speeds.

That does not mean every beginner should buy the softest snowboard available. A board that is too soft can become unstable as your speed and confidence increase.

The goal is balance: accessible now, but capable enough to progress with you.

All-mountain snowboards are often a great place to start

For many riders buying their first snowboard, versatility is more useful than specialisation.

A good All-Mountain Snowboard lets you learn turns on piste, explore different parts of the resort and gradually discover which type of riding you enjoy most.

You may eventually decide that you prefer carving, freeriding or freestyle. There is no need to make that decision before you have spent enough time on snow to know what actually feels good.

This is one of the reasons we often prefer a balanced all-mountain board over an extremely specialised beginner model.

Camber, rocker or hybrid for beginners?

Snowboard profile influences how easily a board turns, grips and responds.

Rocker can make a snowboard feel easy to manoeuvre and forgiving because the contact points are lifted away from the snow.

Camber generally provides stronger edge hold, stability and response. Modern softer camber boards can still be excellent options for beginners, particularly if you want a snowboard that continues to perform as your technique improves.

Hybrid profiles combine characteristics from both and can offer a useful middle ground between grip and forgiveness.

Do not choose solely because a board says rocker or camber on the specification sheet. Flex, shape, sidecut and overall construction matter just as much.

Our Snowboards Explained guide goes deeper into shapes, profiles and snowboard construction.

Beginner snowboard or freestyle snowboard?

There is plenty of overlap between beginner and Freestyle Snowboards.

Many freestyle boards have manageable flexes, balanced shapes and an easy-to-move feel, which can make them accessible for newer riders.

However, you do not need a freestyle board just because you are a beginner. If you mainly want to learn turns and explore the whole resort, a balanced all-mountain shape will often make more sense.

If you already know you want to ride switch, learn small jumps, butter and eventually spend time in the park, a more freestyle-oriented board can be a good direction.

Choosing the right beginner snowboard size

Correct sizing is one of the most important parts of choosing your first snowboard.

Do not simply pick a length based on your height.

Start with your weight and the manufacturer's recommended weight range for the specific snowboard. Then consider your boot size, riding level and how you want the board to feel.

A slightly shorter board within your recommended range can feel easier to manoeuvre. More length generally provides additional stability.

Width is equally important. Riders with larger snowboard boots may need a wider board to keep their toes and heels from extending too far beyond the edges.

Use our Snowboard Size Guide to understand how weight, boot size, width and board design work together.

Beginner snowboards for men and women

Our selection includes boards across our Men's Snowboards and Women's Snowboards collections.

Do not focus too heavily on the label.

The important factors are whether the board's dimensions, flex and recommended rider-weight range match you. Depending on your size and preferences, a men's, women's or unisex board may be the best option.

Your first snowboard setup

Buying your first snowboard is only part of building a good setup.

Your snowboard boots have a huge influence on comfort and control. Boots that are too large can create heel movement and delayed response, while boots that are too small or the wrong shape can make an otherwise good day uncomfortable.

Your snowboard bindings should match your boot size and work with the general flex of your board. For most beginning and progressing riders, an excessively stiff setup is unnecessary.

Board, boots and bindings should work together rather than being chosen independently.

Which beginner snowboard should I choose?

If you are unsure, start with what you already know.

Think about your current level, weight, boot size and the terrain you expect to ride most. You do not need to understand every snowboard specification before buying your first board.

Our Snowboard Finder uses your level and riding preferences to narrow the selection to boards that make sense for you.
