How to choose snowboard goggles and a helmet

Lens tint, VLT, frame shape, helmet fit and compatibility explained without making the last part of your setup more complicated than it needs to be.

Snowboard Goggles and Helmets: How to Choose

Goggles and helmets are the parts of a setup people tend to sort out last, usually the week before they fly. They are also the parts you notice most once the light goes flat and the visibility drops.

A board that does not quite suit you is a mild annoyance. Goggles you cannot see out of at three in the afternoon change the whole day.

What matters when choosing a lens

Choose a lens that suits the light you will really ride in, then get a helmet that fits your head and works properly with those goggles.

Neither is complicated, but both are easy to get wrong if you buy on looks alone.

Lens tint is the decision that matters

Every goggle lens has a VLT figure, short for visible light transmission. It is the percentage of light the lens lets through.

A low number means a dark lens for bright days. A high number means a pale lens that helps you see when the light is poor.

Bright sun 5–20% VLT

Dark lenses for bluebird days, high altitude and strong reflected light.

Mixed conditions 20–40% VLT

The most useful single-lens range for typical European riding.

Flat light 40%+ VLT

Pale lenses for snowfall, cloud, dusk and low-contrast conditions.

Tint colour

Tint colour does a separate job. Darker greys and blacks keep colours natural and cut brightness, which is why they suit clear, sunny days.

Rose, amber and copper tints lift contrast in poor light, making bumps and edges visible when everything has gone the same shade of white.

Why warm tints help

Flat light is not necessarily dark. It is featureless. A pale lens with a warm base tint gives you back the definition needed to read the snow.

This is where lens quality shows. Our Zeiss Sonar lenses are built specifically around contrast rather than just tint.

That matters most when visibility is marginal, not when the weather is already perfect.

One lens, two lenses or photochromic

You have three practical options.

One mid-range lens

The simplest approach. Pick something around 25 to 35 percent VLT and accept that it will be slightly dark in snowfall and slightly bright in strong sun.

Two-lens setup

One dark lens and one flat-light lens. This is the better setup if you ride enough to care about changing conditions.

Photochromic

The lens automatically darkens and lightens as conditions change. Convenient and genuinely useful, although more expensive.

The trade-off

Photochromic transitions are not instant. A spare lens still gives the clearest control over very bright and very poor light.

Cylindrical or spherical

Cylindrical

Curved horizontally but flat vertically. Usually more affordable, with a flatter and more classic goggle shape.

Spherical

Curved in both directions. This better follows the shape of the eye and can improve peripheral vision and reduce edge distortion.

The Nimbus uses a cylindrical lens.

The Achlys is available with spherical lens or you can swap to a cylindrical lens.

How much difference does it make?

The difference is real, but not dramatic. The extra peripheral vision is most useful in trees and poor visibility. A good cylindrical lens is still plenty for clear days and groomed runs.

Helmet fit

A helmet should sit level on your head, cover your forehead without pushing down on your eyebrows, and stay put when you shake your head with the strap undone.

If it moves, it is too big. If you feel pressure points within a few minutes in the shop, it will feel worse after three hours on the hill.

Measure properly

Measure around your head just above your ears and eyebrows, then compare that number with the brand's size chart.

Use the dial correctly

The rear dial is for fine tuning. It is not there to make the wrong shell size fit.

Check pressure points

Pressure at the forehead, temples or back of the head usually means the shape is wrong.

Try different brands

Some helmets suit rounder heads, while others have a longer and narrower internal shape.

Head shapes differ as much as feet do. This is the main reason it is worth trying a few rather than ordering the one you liked the look of.

MIPS and what it actually does

MIPS is a low-friction layer inside the helmet that lets the shell rotate slightly against your head during an impact.

Most crashes involve some angle rather than a clean straight hit, and that rotational movement is what the system is designed to reduce.

Fit still comes first

MIPS is worth having, but a well-fitting helmet without MIPS protects you better than a poorly fitting helmet with it.

The K2 Phase MIPS is a solid, well-priced example.

Ventilation

Ventilation matters more than people expect. Snowboarding involves a lot of standing around followed by short bursts of effort, and a helmet you cannot vent gets uncomfortable quickly.

Adjustable vents are worth looking for. The K2 Stash is a good example of a simple helmet that breathes well.

The gap between helmet and goggles

This is the detail almost nobody checks before buying, and it is the one that can ruin the combination.

Your goggles should sit flush against the front edge of the helmet with no gap of exposed forehead between them.

Why the gap matters

Beyond looking odd, it leaves a strip of skin directly in the wind at speed. It gets cold quickly and usually means the shapes do not match properly.

The frame should meet the helmet cleanly along the whole top edge, and the strap should sit properly in the clip at the back.

Different brands pair better than others, which is the practical argument for buying both at once rather than buying a helmet in October and goggles in January.

Looking after them

Goggle lenses

Never wipe the inside of a goggle lens, wet or dry. The anti-fog coating is a surface treatment, and a single wipe with a glove can damage it permanently.

If the inside gets wet, shake the water out and let it air dry.

Dry your goggles face-up somewhere warm at the end of the day rather than sealing them in a bag, and store them in the pouch they came with.

The pouch is for storage

Do not use the storage pouch to aggressively polish the lens, especially on the inside.

Helmets

Most helmets have removable liners that can be washed, while the shell usually only needs a wipe.

Replace a helmet after a significant impact even if it looks fine. The impact foam compresses once and does not fully recover.

If you are building a setup from scratch, work in this order.

Fit the helmet

Get the right shell shape and size before thinking about the goggles.

Match the goggles

Check that the frame meets the helmet cleanly without a forehead gap.

Choose the lens

Pick the VLT range based on the weather and time of year you actually ride.

Consider a spare

Add a second lens if you regularly ride both bright sun and poor visibility.

One mid-range lens is usually enough if you go once a year. A two-lens setup makes more sense if you ride more often.
