Shirts & Flannels Sale at Behind The Pines Amsterdam

Reduced shirts, flannels and overshirts from Universal Works, KnowledgeCotton, OAS, Patagonia, La Paz and Service Works. Mostly previous-season fabrics and colours, cut on the same patterns as the current season and made in the same mills. A shirt is not a technical product with a spec sheet, so last season means very little here beyond the price.

What is on the rail changes as sizes go. Expect brushed cotton flannels, heavier overshirt weights, a few linen and linen-blend pieces left from summer, and the plain oxfords and poplins that quietly do most of the work in a wardrobe.

A shirt is a mid layer, not a top

The most useful thing in a Dutch spring is not a jacket. It is an overshirt in heavy flannel or moleskin: worn open over a tee at 15 degrees, worn buttoned under a shell at 8. That single garment covers most of March, April, October and November, which is more than can be said for anything with a membrane in it.

The mistake is buying shirts as tops only. A 120gsm poplin is a summer shirt and does one job. A 220 to 280gsm brushed flannel or a moleskin overshirt is closer to a light jacket, and it wants to be sized with that in mind. If you plan to layer over a t-shirt or thin merino, take your normal size in a relaxed cut like Universal Works, or size up in a slimmer Patagonia or KnowledgeCotton shirt. A shirt you cannot raise your arms in over a base layer stays in the wardrobe.

Fabric weight, in plain numbers

Grams per square metre is the only number worth knowing. Under 130gsm is summer. Around 160 to 180gsm is a year-round shirt. Above 200gsm you are into flannel and overshirt territory, warm enough to be outerwear indoors and a mid layer outside. Brushing raises a nap that traps air, which is why a brushed 200gsm feels warmer than a smooth 240gsm twill.

Shrinkage, washing and how flannel ages

Most good cotton shirts are pre-shrunk but still lose a little in the first hot wash, mostly in body length. Wash cold, hang dry, and it stays where you bought it. Portuguese flannel tends to stay dense and smooth after ten washes; Japanese brushed cotton usually softens more and pills slightly at cuffs and elbows, which some people want and some do not. Neither is a fault. It is a difference in how the yarn is spun.

Orders ship from Amsterdam. If you can come in, try things on over the t-shirt you would actually wear underneath. Shirt fit is mostly shoulder width and body length, and neither is obvious from a size label.

Frequently asked questions

Is sale stock last season?

Mostly yes. These are previous-season colours and checks, cut on the same patterns in the same fabrics. Shirts do not get updated the way technical gear does, so the difference is the season on the tag.

Should I size up for layering?

In a heavy flannel or overshirt, yes, if you intend to wear it over a mid layer. In a relaxed cut like Universal Works or OAS, your normal size usually already has the room.

Will a flannel shirt shrink?

A little in the first wash, mostly in length. Wash at 30 degrees and hang dry rather than tumbling, and it will stop there.

Is an overshirt warm enough on its own?

Down to around 10 degrees with a tee underneath, if there is no wind. It has no wind resistance, so on an open stretch it works far better under a shell than on its own.

Can I return a sale shirt?

Yes, within 30 days, unworn and with tags attached. Try it on with your arms above your head; that is where a shirt that is too small gives itself away.
