Snow Peak has been making gear in Tsubame-Sanjo, a metalworking town in Niigata, since 1958. The titanium range is what the brand is best known for outside Japan: mugs, cooksets, sporks and bottles that weigh a fraction of their steel equivalents and last effectively forever.
Titanium is not simply lighter steel. It behaves differently — it heats fast and unevenly, it does not hold a taste, and one crucial rule applies to insulated pieces. That rule is worth knowing before you buy.
Why titanium
Weight
A titanium mug weighs roughly half its stainless equivalent and a third of a comparable ceramic one. Over a full cookset the saving is real — this is why titanium became the default for people who carry their kitchen on their back.
No taste
Titanium is inert. Coffee does not taste of yesterday's soup, and acidic food does not pick up a metallic edge the way it can from aluminium. There is no coating to wear off, because there is no coating.
Single wall versus double wall
This is the important one. Single-wall titanium can go directly over a flame — boil water in the mug, cook in it, put it on a stove. Double-wall titanium is vacuum-insulated to keep drinks hot, and must never go on a flame: heating it destroys the vacuum seal and ruins the piece. If you want one mug that does everything, buy single wall and accept that it burns your fingers.
How to choose
Start with whether you cook in it. If yes, single wall, and pick the volume from what you actually make — the 450 ml sizes are right for one person, the Trek cooksets for two.
If it is purely a drinking vessel and you value hot coffee over versatility, double wall is the better object: it insulates properly and stays cool to hold.
The sporks and cutlery are simple to choose — they are all light, all durable, and the only decision is folding or fixed.
What to expect
- Single-wall pieces are flame safe. Double-wall insulated pieces are not, and heating them will destroy them.
- Titanium discolours with heat, turning blue and gold around the base. That is oxidation, not damage.
- It heats fast and unevenly — stir more than you would in steel to avoid scorching.
- Single-wall mugs transmit heat straight to your hand. The folding handles help; a cloth helps more.

Can I put a Snow Peak titanium mug on a stove?
Single-wall mugs, yes — they are designed for it. Double-wall insulated mugs, no. Heating a double-wall piece breaks the vacuum and ruins it permanently.
Why has my titanium gone blue?
Heat oxidation. It is a surface effect on the metal, entirely harmless, and most people come to like it. It cannot be scrubbed off and does not need to be.
Is titanium worth the price over stainless steel?
If you carry it, yes — roughly half the weight for the same volume, and it will outlive you. If it stays in a car or a kitchen, stainless does the same job for less.
Does food stick to it?
More than to a coated pan. Titanium conducts heat unevenly, so use a lower flame and stir. There is no non-stick coating to protect, which is also why it never wears out.
Is it dishwasher safe?
Yes. Titanium does not corrode and has no coating to strip.
