A bag is something you interact with fifty times a day and then live with for five years, which makes it one of the better categories to buy reduced. Nothing about a pack goes out of date. Cabin limits are set in dimensions, not litres, so a soft 40L that measures within 55x40x20cm will board when a rigid 35L that is 25cm deep will not. If you fly hand luggage only, measure the bag instead of trusting the category name, and remember that the sizer at the gate is unforgiving in a way a website never is.

Access, and roll-tops in Dutch rain

How a bag opens is what you notice every day. A zip is fast and precise. A roll-top has no failure point and no seam for water to find, which is why it is the better answer for a bike commute here. Rain in the Netherlands arrives mostly sideways and lands on the top and back panel of a pack, which is exactly where zips leak. If the bag has to survive being on a bike four days a week, take the roll-top. If you are in and out of it at a desk all day, take the zip.

Laptop sleeves and where they should sit

A laptop sleeve belongs against the back panel, not against the front of the bag. A front-mounted sleeve hangs the heaviest thing you own away from your spine, and you feel that within twenty minutes of walking. The second detail worth checking is whether the sleeve is suspended, meaning it stops a few centimetres above the base. If it runs all the way down, your laptop hits the floor every single time you put the bag down.

Frequently asked questions

Is sale stock last season's product?

Generally yes, and bags are a category where that means close to nothing. Harnesses, fabrics and hardware carry over for years, so you are buying the current design in a superseded colour. Nothing here is an outlet-only version or a second.

What size backpack do I actually need?

For a commute with a laptop, lunch and a spare layer, 20 to 25 litres is plenty. For a weekend away, 30 to 35 litres, provided it opens clamshell. Anything larger tends to get filled simply because the space is there, which is how people end up carrying twelve kilos to the airport.

Will it fit as cabin luggage?

Check the dimensions rather than the volume, because dimensions are what airlines measure. A soft bag with some give will usually make a sizer that a rigid one of the same litres will not. Every product page lists them, and we are happy to check a specific airline for you.

Are these waterproof?

Most are water-resistant rather than waterproof: the fabric sheds rain and the zips are the weak point. A roll-top closure handles a Dutch downpour better than a zip, and for anything genuinely valuable a dry bag or a liner inside the pack is the honest answer.

Can I return a sale bag?

Yes, within 30 days and unused. Load it at home with the things you actually carry rather than judging it empty, because an empty pack tells you nothing about how it will sit once there are four kilos in it.
