A new boot should feel almost too tight. Your toes should brush the end when you stand upright and pull back off it when you flex your knees. Liners pack out roughly half a size in the first week of riding, so a boot that feels comfortable in the shop will be sloppy by day four. What you are checking for is heel hold: strap in, flex forward, and your heel should stay planted on the footbed. If it lifts, no amount of cranking the lacing will fix it, because the problem is the shape of the heel pocket, not the tension.

Flex, and matching it to how you ride

Softer boots are more forgiving, easier for presses and butters, and less tiring on a long resort day. Stiffer boots transmit input faster and hold up on hardpack and at speed. Most people are somewhere in the middle and should stay there. Worth knowing: boot flex and binding flex want to be in the same neighbourhood, because a stiff binding on a soft boot just crushes the boot and you lose the response you paid for.

Lacing, and honest words about Boa

Boa is fast, easy with gloves on, and easy to adjust on a chairlift. It is not automatically better. A dual Boa gives you two zones; traditional laces give you tension exactly where you want it and are repairable anywhere with a spare lace. Speed lacing sits between the two. Pick the system you will actually re-tighten mid-morning, because a boot that is not re-tightened once the liner warms up is a loose boot.

How it fits with the rest of the kit

Boots, bindings and board are one system, so check the snowboard bindings you are pairing them with and make sure the flex is in range. Frequently asked questions

Is sale stock last season?

Yes, mostly. Boots carry over with small changes, so a previous-season model usually has the same last, liner and flex as the current one. You are paying less for the colourway, not for a lesser boot.

How tight should a new snowboard boot be?

Snug enough that your toes touch the end when you stand up straight and pull away when you bend your knees. Liners pack out around half a size, so comfortable in the shop means loose on the mountain.

Can I buy boots online if I cannot come in?

Yes. Measure your foot length in centimetres and compare it to the brand's mondopoint chart. Try them indoors on carpet with the socks you will ride in, and send them back within 30 days if the heel lifts.

Is Boa better than laces?

It is faster and easier with gloves on, not inherently better. Laces give you more precise tension zone by zone. Both work; pick the one you will actually adjust during the day.

Do I need to heat-mould the liner?

Not always, but it shortens the break-in and helps a lot with a high instep or a wide forefoot. We do it in the shop, and most liners will also mould in over a few days of riding.
