A mid layer sits between your base layer and your shell, and it is the piece that actually decides whether you are comfortable. The jacket keeps weather out. The base layer moves sweat off your skin. Everything in between — how much heat you hold, how fast you dump it once you start working — happens here. It is also the cheapest part of a snow kit to get right, which is why buying one reduced makes more sense than almost anything else you could put in a basket.

What is in here is previous-season colourways: grid fleeces, hooded fleeces, synthetic-insulated pullovers and a few light down pieces, mostly Patagonia with some Arc'teryx alongside. Grid fleece, synthetic or down — and why down is usually the wrong answer

Most riding days are not still, dry and cold. They are standing around, then sweating on a traverse or a short bootpack, then sitting on a chairlift in the wind with damp skin. That cycle is what a mid layer has to survive, and it is exactly what down is worst at. Down needs loft, loft needs dryness, and once down takes on body moisture it flattens and stops insulating. It barely breathes either, so it holds the sweat you make instead of passing it out to the shell. A down sweater is a fine thing in a cold car park or a hut at night. Under a jacket, on a moving day, it is the wrong tool.

Grid fleece — the waffle-backed stuff, Patagonia's R1 and its relatives — is the honest default. It traps a thin layer of air in the grid, wicks along the channels and dries fast. Synthetic insulation sits between the two: warmer for the weight, still working when damp, and the better call for genuinely cold resorts or people who ride cold. If you own one mid layer, make it a grid fleece. If you own two, add a light synthetic for January.

The moment that tells you whether you chose right

Top of the lift, ten minutes after a sweaty traverse, standing still in the wind. That is the test. If the layer held your moisture instead of passing it on, you go cold immediately and stay cold for two runs. If it moved the sweat out and kept some air trapped, you barely notice the stop.

Fit, hoods and helmets

A mid layer should be close but never compressed — a fleece squashed flat under a tight shell has no air left in it and stops insulating. Look for a dropped hem that stays put when you reach, thumb loops that keep sleeves from riding up while you strap in, and a low-profile hood that sits flat under a helmet. If a hood bunches at the back of your neck, you will stop using it by day two.

Frequently asked questions

Is sale stock last season's gear?

Mostly, yes — these are previous-season colourways. Fleece and synthetic insulation do not change meaningfully from year to year, so last winter's grid fleece is this winter's garment in a different colour. Warranty and returns are identical.

Do I still need a mid layer if my jacket is insulated?

Usually a thin one. An insulated jacket fixes your warmth at a single level, and adding or dropping a mid layer is how you adapt to the actual day. It also gives you something to ride in when the sun comes out and the jacket comes off.

Can I just wear a normal hoodie?

On a mild bluebird day, fine. Cotton is the problem: it soaks up sweat, holds it against your skin and takes hours to dry. On a cold or wet day a cotton hoodie under a shell will make you colder, not warmer.

How many layers should I actually wear?

Three is the standard answer and it is right most of the time: base, mid, shell. On very cold days add a second thin mid layer rather than one thick one — two thin pieces trap more air and give you far more options through the day.

What size should I take?

Your normal size. Mid layers are cut to be worn under a shell, so they already run trimmer than a casual fleece. Sizing up leaves dead air that does not insulate and makes the sleeves bunch inside your jacket.
