Hiking Shoes Sale

Hiking Shoes Sale at Behind The Pines Amsterdam

Reduced hiking shoes and boots from Danner, Merrell, Arc'teryx, Mizuno, Saucony, Vans and Flower Mountain. This is a genuinely mixed rail: stitchdown leather boots built to be resoled, light approach and trail shoes with real outsoles, and a few models that sit somewhere between a hiking shoe and a city shoe. Almost all of it is previous-season colourways with unchanged construction.

Hiking footwear is a good category to buy reduced because the technology moves slowly. A Vibram compound and a stitchdown welt do not get reinvented between seasons. What changes is the colour and the fact that we need the space.

Do you actually need a boot, or a trail shoe with a decent outsole?

Be honest about where you walk. Most trips out of the Netherlands are the Ardennes, the Eifel, the Vosges or the Veluwe: rolling, wet, muddy and forested, but not alpine. On that terrain a low trail shoe with a proper lugged outsole covers everything, weighs half as much, dries faster and doubles as a shoe you can wear in the city. Ankle support matters far less than most people believe once the ground is soft rather than rocky.

A boot earns its place in two situations: carrying weight, and wanting a shoe you will still own in ten years. A stitchdown Danner is not really about ankles at all. It is about a construction that can be resoled repeatedly, leather that moulds to your foot and a stiffer midsole that stops a heavy pack from beating your arches up over three days. If you are doing a day walk with a small bag, that stiffness is just weight. If you are carrying twenty kilos over scree, it is the whole point.

Waterproof membranes, honestly

A membrane keeps water out and sweat in. That trade is worth it in a wet Dutch autumn or on a cold walk where your feet are not working hard. In summer, or on anything sustained, a non-membrane shoe that lets water through and then drains and dries can be the better call, because your foot is going to get wet anyway from the inside. The other thing nobody says: once water comes over the collar of a waterproof shoe, it stays in. A ventilated shoe empties.

Outsoles, lugs and what to look at

Deep, widely spaced lugs shed mud and grip soft ground; shallower, denser patterns are better on rock and far better on pavement. Softer rubber grips wet stone and wears out faster. If your walking is half forest and half getting there, the middle of that range is where to look. Check the heel brake too, because that is what stops you on a wet descent, which is where most hiking injuries in this part of Europe actually happen.

How it fits with the rest of the kit

The full hiking shoes collection has current-season models, and if you are leaning light it is worth comparing against trail running shoes, which often have better outsoles than people expect. For membrane models, Gore-Tex shoes is the shortcut, and what exactly is Gore-Tex explains what you are and are not buying. Danner and Merrell have their own pages, and the rest of the walking kit sits under hike.

What to expect in the sale

  • Previous-season colourways: same last, same outsole, same construction as the current colour.
  • Broken size runs: mid sizes go first and hiking footwear is rarely restocked after a season.
  • Boots and low shoes together: stitchdown leather next to light trail and approach models.
  • Full service: the same warranty, the same 30-day returns and the same fitting advice.

Why buy hiking shoes at Behind The Pines

We are a shop in Amsterdam and we walk in this stuff, mostly in the wet forest terrain that a few hours by car gets you to. So we will ask where you are going before we recommend anything, and we will happily tell you that the boot you are looking at is more shoe than your weekend needs.

Orders ship from Amsterdam. If you can come in, bring the socks you walk in and try things on late in the day, when your feet have swollen slightly. You want roughly a thumbnail of space in front of your longest toe: on a descent, a foot that reaches the end of the shoe is how you lose a toenail.

Frequently asked questions

Is sale stock last season?

Usually yes. These are previous-season colourways of models whose last, midsole and outsole carry over unchanged. Hiking footwear changes slowly, so a year-old colour is the only real difference.

Do I need waterproof hiking shoes?

For Dutch and Belgian walking between autumn and spring, a membrane is genuinely useful. In summer, or if you sweat a lot, a shoe that drains and dries quickly often keeps your feet more comfortable than one that seals them in.

Boots or low shoes for the Ardennes?

Low shoes with a good outsole are enough for almost all of it. Take a boot if you are carrying a heavy pack for several days, or if you have a history of rolling an ankle on uneven ground.

Which size should I take?

Half a size up from your street shoe is a common starting point, because feet swell and toes need room on descents. Try them with hiking socks and check that your heel does not lift when you walk downhill.

Can Danner boots be resoled?

The stitchdown models are built for it, which is a large part of why they cost what they do. A pair worn regularly can be resoled several times and outlive four pairs of glued shoes.
