This sale is where previous-season colourways from the brands we stock all year end up: same fabric, same construction, same warranty, simply not the current drop.

What is in here moves as stock sells, but the shape of it stays consistent. The climbing trouser has quietly replaced jeans for most days

The default answer to what to put on used to be denim, and everything else was a specialist option. For a lot of people that has flipped, and the reason is not fashion. It is the bike. A nylon or cotton double-weave trouser with a gusseted crotch and a webbing belt lets your knee come up without the fabric fighting you, dries in an hour over a radiator, and does not hold a cold wet patch across the thighs the way heavy denim does. On a wet Tuesday that is the whole day.

Denim still earns its place, but it is a different proposition. Raw denim is a commitment: stiff for a month, worn in rather than washed in, and the payoff is a pair that fits you specifically after a year and can be repaired instead of replaced. Sizing: take your normal size

The mistake we see most often is sizing down on a relaxed cut because it looks big on the hanger. It is meant to. Gramicci and Universal Works patterns are drafted with room through the seat and thigh, and going down a size turns a comfortable trouser into one that no longer sits properly at the waist. Raw denim is the exception. It gives roughly half a size at the waist over the first few weeks, so honest-but-snug when new is usually correct.

What survives the washing machine

Ripstop nylon and double-weave come out of a cold wash and off a hanger looking the same as they went in, which is most of why they end up in the daily rotation. Heavier cotton twill and moleskin shrink a little on a first hot wash and then stop, so wash cold and it never becomes a problem. Raw denim you leave alone as long as you sensibly can, then wash cold and inside out.

How it fits with the rest of the kit

Bottoms are the layer people build around rather than shop for first, so it is worth seeing the full pants and trousers range before adding another pair, and in summer the same cuts turn up as shorts — a Gramicci short is the same trouser with less leg. Is sale stock last season's product?

Usually, and on trousers it matters very little. Brands like Gramicci and Universal Works carry the same patterns and fabrics across years and change the colour range, so you are buying current construction in a superseded colourway. Nothing here is a factory second or made for outlet.

Do these run true to size?

Relaxed and utility cuts run relaxed by design, so take your normal size rather than sizing down. Denim is the one to be careful with, since raw pairs give about half a size at the waist in the first weeks. If you are unsure, email us the brand and your usual size and we will tell you what we would send.

What actually makes a climbing trouser different?

A gusseted crotch, a wider or articulated leg, and usually a webbing belt built into the waist. The trouser moves with your hip instead of pulling against it, which you notice getting on a bike or sitting cross-legged. The fabric is normally nylon or a cotton double-weave that dries quickly.

Can I return sale items?

Yes, with the same 30-day window as everything else, unworn and with tags attached. Try them on over socks you would actually wear and check the rise sitting down rather than only standing up.

Will sold-out sizes come back?

Rarely. Sale stock is what remains of a season, so once a waist size goes it is generally gone rather than restocked. If one specific pair matters to you, ask us whether the shop still has it on the floor.
