Jackets Sale at Behind The Pines Amsterdam

This is the reduced part of our jacket rail: hardshells, insulated pieces, fleeces and light wind layers from Patagonia, Arc'teryx and Haglöfs. Most of it is previous-season colourways of jackets that are otherwise unchanged, and a jacket is one of the few garments where that genuinely means nothing. The membrane, the fabric weight, the hood construction and the warranty are the same as the current colour at full price.

A jacket is also the item people put off buying because of the number on the tag. This is where that stops being an argument. Stock changes daily, so treat it as a rail to browse rather than a catalogue to search.

Hardshell, insulated or windshell for a Dutch year

Nine months of the Dutch year sit between 8 and 14 degrees, wet and windy. That is not cold. It is the range a light shell over a mid layer handles perfectly and a big insulated parka handles badly, because the parka has one setting and you are on a bike. Most people over-buy warmth and under-buy wind resistance, then spend October to April too hot walking and properly cold standing still.

The honest split: a hardshell is weather protection with no warmth of its own, which sounds like a limitation and is the point. You change what is underneath and one jacket covers November drizzle and a March cold snap. An insulated jacket is simpler and better on genuinely cold, low-effort days. A windshell weighs nothing, blocks the thing that actually steals your heat here, and lives in a bag until needed. If you own one jacket, make it the shell.

Wind, not temperature, is what you feel

The Netherlands is flat and open, so wind carries heat off you faster than the thermometer suggests. A densely woven face fabric changes the felt temperature more than another 60 grams of insulation. It is why a fleece alone is miserable on a bridge in February and fine under a shell.

Breathability and what actually wears out

Breathability is the number people ignore and then regret. Sweat into a jacket that cannot move moisture out and you are cold the moment you stop. Pit zips or a two-way front are a cruder but effective answer. The part that fails first is the DWR finish on the face fabric, and that is renewable with a wash-in treatment. Wetting out on the shoulders is a DWR problem, not a dead membrane.

Frequently asked questions

Is sale stock last season?

Usually yes. These are previous-season colourways of jackets whose construction carries over unchanged, so you pay less for a colour that is a year old. Nothing here is a lower-spec version made for a sale.

Do I need a hardshell or is a water-resistant jacket enough?

For commuting and city use in Dutch rain, a treated, tightly woven jacket is often enough. Out for hours, or in sideways rain, you want a taped-seam waterproof.

Will a waterproof jacket keep me warm?

Only by blocking wind and rain. A shell has no insulation, so the warmth comes from the layer beneath it, which is exactly what makes it usable across a far wider temperature range.

Why has my jacket started soaking through the shoulders?

The DWR treatment on the outer fabric has worn off, usually from pack or bag straps. Wash it with a technical detergent and reproof it; the membrane underneath is almost always still fine.

Can I return a sale jacket?

Yes, within 30 days, unworn and with tags on. Try it on over the layers you would actually wear underneath.
