Vans Crosspath XC GORE-TEX MTE
Waterproof function, Vans attitude
The Vans Crosspath XC GORE-TEX MTE sits somewhere between an everyday sneaker and a lightweight outdoor shoe. Waterproof GORE-TEX protection, Vibram grip and all-day cushioning make it particularly useful for wet city days, travel, light trails and everything in between.

GORE-TEX Invisible Fit provides waterproof, breathable protection without turning the Crosspath into a bulky hiking shoe.
Vibram grip
A custom Vibram outsole with XS Trek Evo rubber gives the shoe dependable traction across wet streets, paths and mixed terrain.
Built for long days
An UltraCush EVA midsole keeps the ride comfortable enough for commuting, travelling and spending a full day on your feet.
The Vans sneaker built for unpredictable weather
Vans has always been associated with skate shoes and everyday sneakers, but the Vans MTE line takes that familiar design language into more technical territory. The Vans Crosspath XC GORE-TEX MTE is one of the clearest examples.
It is designed for people who move between different environments during the same day. You might cycle through Amsterdam in the rain, spend hours walking through the city, jump on a train for a weekend away and end up on a muddy forest path. Instead of changing footwear every time the conditions change, the Crosspath XC is designed to simply keep going.
That makes it an interesting alternative to both traditional sneakers and heavier hiking shoes. It has considerably more weather protection and traction than a normal lifestyle sneaker, while remaining lighter and easier to wear every day than a dedicated hiking boot.
GORE-TEX Invisible Fit without the bulky feel
One of the biggest updates to the current Crosspath XC is its GORE-TEX Invisible Fit construction. The membrane is integrated into the upper to provide waterproof and breathable protection while allowing the shoe to retain a relatively streamlined sneaker profile.
For Dutch weather, that makes a lot of sense. Rain, wet pavement and changing conditions are a normal part of daily life, which is why we increasingly see GORE-TEX shoes moving beyond traditional hiking and outdoor use.
If staying dry is the priority but GORE-TEX itself is not essential, you can also explore our wider collection of waterproof shoes.
Vibram XS Trek Evo underfoot
The outsole is another reason the Crosspath XC feels noticeably more capable than a standard Vans sneaker. Vans uses a custom Vibram outsole with XS Trek Evo rubber, combined with a new tread pattern designed around traction and durability on changing surfaces.
That matters on wet pavement just as much as it does once you leave the city. You get a more secure platform on damp paths, loose surfaces and uneven ground without the aggressive feel of a full technical trail shoe.

Why we selected the Vans Crosspath XC GORE-TEX MTE
At Behind The Pines, we are increasingly interested in footwear that does not fit neatly into one category. The most useful shoes are often the ones you can wear almost without thinking about them.
The Crosspath XC does exactly that. It has the waterproofing, grip and construction you expect from modern technical footwear, but it still looks and feels like something you can wear every day.
It is not designed to replace a serious mountain or backpacking shoe. Instead, it makes the most sense for commuting, travelling, long days in the city, lighter hikes and those situations where the route becomes rougher or wetter than expected.

How does the Vans Crosspath XC fit?
The current Crosspath XC GORE-TEX MTE runs slightly smaller. We recommend going half a size up from your usual size, particularly if you prefer a little more room in the toe box or plan to wear thicker socks.
How to wear the Vans Crosspath XC
Despite everything happening underneath the surface, the Crosspath XC is still easy to wear. Pair it with relaxed outdoor pants, denim, fleece, technical shells or a simple overshirt and it does not suddenly make the rest of your outfit look like expedition gear.
That crossover is probably its biggest strength. It belongs to the same wider movement we cover in our Technical Footwear Explained guide: footwear originally influenced by hiking and trail performance becoming increasingly relevant for everyday life.
Who is the Crosspath XC for?
If most of your time is spent on serious mountain trails, a dedicated hiking shoe will still be the better tool. But if your week consists of cycling, walking, commuting, travelling, wet weather and occasional days outside the city, the Crosspath XC makes a lot of sense.
It gives you more protection than a normal sneaker without forcing you into something overly stiff, heavy or specialised. For many people, that is exactly the sweet spot.
