The Ninja Suit is a one-piece base layer, and it exists because of one observation: on a cold day the coldest part of you is the gap at your waist where the thermal top stops and the thermal bottoms start. Remove the gap and the whole system works better. Airblaster made the first one in Portland in the mid-2000s and it has been their signature piece ever since.
It has a full-length front zip, thumb loops, a hood on most models, and — the feature everybody asks about — a drop seat at the back, so you do not have to undress to use a toilet.
Why a one-piece base layer
No gap, no bunching
A two-piece base layer rides up when you reach and rolls at the waist under a harness or a bib. A one-piece cannot. That is the entire argument, and it is a good one — most people who switch do not go back.
Warmth without bulk
Because there is no overlap at the waist and no waistband, a Ninja Suit is thinner at the middle than two garments would be, while being warmer overall. Under a shell it disappears.
The drop seat
A zip or button flap across the seat lets you get out of the way without taking the suit off. It is the difference between a one-piece that is practical and one that is a novelty. Check that the model you are looking at has it — they nearly all do.
Fabric choice
The range splits into polyester and merino-blend versions. Polyester is cheaper, dries fastest and is the more durable of the two. Merino blends are warmer for their weight, resist smell far better over multiple days, and cost more. If you ride weekends, polyester is fine. If you go for a week and want to wear it every day, buy the merino blend.
What to expect
- A drop seat on nearly all models — you do not have to undress. Check the product page if it matters.
- It is a base layer, not insulation. Warmth comes from what you put over it.
- Merino blends resist odour over multiple days; polyester will need washing sooner.
- Sizing matters more than in a two-piece — torso length decides fit, so check your height against the size chart rather than only your chest size.
