The Atom is the piece people buy as a mid layer and then end up wearing on its own for most of the year. That is not an accident. It is insulated enough for a cold morning, breathable enough that you do not overheat walking, and light enough that it lives in a bag without you noticing.

What makes the Atom work

Two things, and they are worth understanding because they are why the Atom outsells more expensive insulation.

The first is Coreloft, a synthetic insulation rather than down. Down is warmer for its weight, but it collapses when wet and takes a long time to dry. Coreloft keeps insulating when damp, which matters far more in a Dutch autumn than the weight penalty does.

The second is the side panels. The Atom uses breathable stretch fleece down the flanks and under the arms instead of insulation. That means heat and moisture have somewhere to go when you start moving, and it is why the jacket does not feel like a sweatbox the moment you walk uphill. Most insulated jackets skip this and are worse for it.

Hoody, jacket or vest

The Hoody is the version most people should buy. The hood fits under a shell hood without bunching, and on its own it covers the cold-neck problem that a collar does not.

The Jacket is the same piece without the hood, which is cleaner under a shell and easier to wear in a city where a hood is redundant.

The Vest keeps your core warm while leaving your arms free, which is more useful than it sounds if you run hot or wear it over a shirt indoors.

Weight variants

Atom LT is the standard: light insulation, wide temperature range, the default recommendation. Heavier variants add insulation for genuinely cold, static conditions. Lighter variants trade warmth for packability. If you are unsure, LT is the one that gets worn most.

How the Atom fits into a system

The Atom is designed to sit under a hardshell, and the pairing with a Beta is the setup we recommend most often. The shell handles wind and water, the Atom handles warmth, and neither is trying to do the other's job. We wrote it up in the Atom Hoody and Beta Jacket layering system.

Fit and sizing

The Atom is cut trim, in line with the rest of Arc'teryx. It is designed to layer under a shell, so there is not much spare room. If you are between sizes and plan to wear it mostly on its own over a shirt, size up. If it is going under a Beta, stay true.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Atom down or synthetic?

Synthetic, using Coreloft. It keeps insulating when damp and dries quickly, which suits wet European winters better than down does.

Can I wear the Atom on its own?

Yes, and most people do for a large part of the year. It is not waterproof, so it wants a shell over it in real rain.

Atom Hoody or Atom Jacket?

Hoody if you will wear it outdoors and want the neck covered. Jacket if it lives under a shell or you wear it mostly in the city.

Does it fit under a Beta?

Yes, that is exactly what it is designed for. Both are cut trim, so take your normal size in each rather than sizing the shell up.

How warm is it?

Warm enough for most of a Dutch winter with a base layer, and a genuine mid layer under a shell in the Alps. It is not a deep-cold static jacket.
