Choose your jacket for the conditions

Weather protection and warmth are different things. An uninsulated shell is designed to protect you from the elements, while warmth comes from the layers beneath it. An insulated jacket includes a thermal layer. Water-repellent fabrics are not the same as waterproof membranes: check the product's specifications rather than assuming every jacket offers the same protection.

Try the fit with the layers you plan to wear. The shoulders should move freely, the sleeves should stay comfortable when you reach forward, and the hood and cuffs should suit your use. Ventilation, pocket placement and packed size can matter as much as insulation. Follow the care instructions to maintain the fabric and its finish.
