Volcom snowboard pants sit in three groups: GORE-TEX shells for people who ride in weather, insulated pants for people who ride cold, and stretch pants for the park. All of them carry Zip Tech, the zipper that joins the pant to a matching Volcom jacket and closes the gap at the waist where snow gets in.

The names have stayed consistent for years — Arthur, Klocker, Hotlapper, New Snow, L GORE-TEX — which makes it easy to buy the same fit again once you find yours. Below is the part that is harder: working out which fit you want in the first place.

Shell, insulated, or stretch

GORE-TEX shells

Uninsulated, fully waterproof, taped seams. The warmth comes from a base layer, which means you can ride the same pant in December and in April. This is the versatile choice and the one most people should default to. It is also the one that feels cold on the chairlift if you have nothing on underneath.

Insulated pants

Light synthetic fill built in. Warmer on lifts and standing around, and enough on its own for a cold resort day. Less useful in spring, when there is nothing to take off. If your legs are the first part of you to get cold, this is the honest answer.

Stretch and park pants

The Klocker and stretch models are cut for movement and tend to run looser. Better for tweaking grabs and buttering, marginally less abrasion-resistant against edges and rails. If you spend most of the day in the park, the trade is worth it.

How to choose your fit

Volcom's cuts run from a slim tapered leg to genuinely wide. The model name is not a reliable guide — check the fit stated on the product page. Two practical points: a wide leg needs to clear your boot without dragging in the snow, so measure your inseam over your boots rather than in socks. And a pant that fits perfectly over base layers will be tight once you add a mid-layer, so if you ride cold, buy for the layered version of yourself.

• GORE-TEX models are waterproof with taped seams; other models use Volcom's own membrane and sit at a lower standard — the product page says which.

• Most models have inner gaiters and reinforced cuffs; check for vents if you ride hot.
• Fits vary widely across the range. Do not assume your size in one model carries to another.

Only to a Volcom jacket with Zip Tech. The system is Volcom's own; it will not mate with another brand.

What size should I buy?

Take your normal waist size and check the stated fit for the model. If you ride cold and layer, size for the layers. Measure your inseam with boots on — a wide-leg pant that drags is a pant you will stand on.

Are they warm enough for spring?

Insulated models are usually too warm by March. A shell with a light base layer covers the whole season, which is why we point most people there.

How do I look after them?

Wash them when they start wetting out. Technical detergent, no fabric softener, then warm tumble or a low iron through a cloth to bring the DWR back. Dirt is what makes outerwear soak through, not worn-out membrane.
