Opinel N°09 DIY Grey

The Opinel N°09 DIY Grey is a focused tool-knife for a work bag, vehicle or office drawer. It keeps a proper 8 cm cutting blade at the centre of the design, then adds a wire cutter, wire stripper and two screwdriver bits without turning the handle into a crowded multitool. The result is practical for small repairs and routine maintenance.

Its 8 cm martensitic stainless-steel blade is specified at 55–57 HRC. Opinel integrates a cutter for cable up to 5 mm in diameter and a stripper for conductors up to 1.8 mm. These are useful mechanical features, but the knife is not insulated: disconnect and verify electrical circuits before work, and use rated electrical tools where protection is required.

The fibreglass-reinforced polyamide handle resists shocks and humidity better than a traditional wooden handle. Two standard bits store in the rear: a flat bit for 4 mm screws and a crosshead bit for screws from 3.5 to 5 mm. A magnetic holder keeps the selected bit in place during controlled, light-duty screwdriving.

A Virobloc safety ring locks the blade in the open position for work and in the closed position for transport. Rotate it deliberately before applying pressure. The 11.82 cm handle provides enough purchase for cutting tasks, but use a dedicated driver when a fastener is tight enough to demand high torque.

This model makes sense for someone who regularly opens packaging, trims cord, strips small conductors or tightens common screws and wants one compact tool nearby. It is less suitable for food preparation than the classic N°08 and less weather-focused than the Outdoor models; its strength is specific repair functionality.

Clean the blade and wire-work areas after use and dry them completely. Avoid prolonged exposure to salt water, acids and detergents. Keep the bit recess clear of grit, inspect the magnetic holder and sharpen the plain cutting edge with a consistent angle. Never place the knife in a dishwasher.
