Snowboard Bags & Storage at Behind The Pines Amsterdam

Two different problems, both solved here. Getting a board to the mountain in one piece, and keeping it in one piece for the seven months a year it is not being ridden. Riding out of Amsterdam means most seasons involve a flight, and most of the year involves a cupboard.

Sizing

The number in the bag's name is the maximum board length it takes, not a rough guide. A 166 bag fits a board up to 166 cm and no more — measure your board rather than estimating. If you travel with two boards, or a board and a partner's, size up rather than hoping.

Wheels or not

Wheeled bags are heavier empty and worth every gram in an airport. A padded sleeve is lighter and cheaper and better for a car or a train, where you are never carrying it more than fifty metres. If you fly, buy wheels.

Packing it

Most airlines count a snowboard bag as one piece of sports equipment, which usually means you can put boots, bindings and outerwear in the same bag. That is free padding and free baggage allowance in one move — wrap the board in your jacket and pants, boots at the nose and tail. Take the bindings off if the bag is a tight fit.

Off-season storage

The thing that quietly ruins bases is storing a board dry. Over a summer, an unwaxed base oxidises, goes chalky white at the edges and stops holding wax properly. The fix is a thick coat of storage wax left unscraped until autumn — you scrape it off on the first day of the season.

Beyond that: dry the board and the edges before it goes away, store it somewhere at normal room temperature rather than a damp garage or a hot loft, and keep it out of direct sunlight. Flat or vertical both work. A wall mount is the tidy version of the same thing, and it keeps the board off a damp floor.
