In snowy conditions, a well-thought-out layering system is crucial to maintaining comfort and warmth. This system typically comprises three layers: the base layer, the mid-layer, and the outer layer. Each of these layers serves a unique purpose, working together to provide you with the perfect balance of warmth, breathability, and protection from the elements.

Base Layer (First Layer):

The base layer, also known as thermal clothing, helps regulate your body temperature by wicking moisture away from your skin. This layer can consist of thin merino/polyester shirts and pants or thicker variations, depending on your preferences and the weather conditions. Merino wool is an excellent choice for this layer, as it can absorb moisture without feeling wet, ensuring your skin stays dry and comfortable.

Mid Layer (Second Layer):

The mid-layer serves as insulation and can be adjusted based on the temperature and your activity level. In colder weather, opt for thicker garments like fleece or down-filled vests, while thinner layers are more suitable for milder conditions or during high-energy activities like hiking or snowboarding.

Outer Layer (Third Layer):

The outer layer, comprising snow jackets and pants, is designed to protect you from wind, snow, and rain. Contrary to popular belief, the best winter sports jackets are thin shells, as they offer versatility in various conditions. By adjusting the layers beneath the jacket, you can adapt to changing weather and activity levels, ensuring you stay warm and dry throughout your adventure.

Our collection of snowboard and ski jackets includes options for both men and women, featuring top brands such as Patagonia, Volcom, Candide, Arc'teryx, Aiblaster, and more. These jackets are designed with functionality and style in mind, ensuring that you not only stay warm and dry but also look great on the slopes or in the mountains.

When choosing a snow jacket, it's essential to consider factors such as breathability, waterproofing, insulation, and fit. At Behind the Pines, our expert team is available to guide you through the selection process, ensuring you find the perfect jacket for your needs.

Breathability:

A breathable snow jacket allows moisture vapor to escape, preventing you from feeling clammy and damp during physical activity. Look for jackets with high breathability ratings, as these will provide the best moisture-wicking properties.

Waterproofing:

A good snow jacket should be waterproof to protect you from wet weather conditions. Waterproof ratings are measured in millimeters, with higher numbers indicating better protection. We recommend choosing a jacket with a waterproof rating of at least 10,000mm for optimal protection.

Insulation:

The level of insulation you need depends on the weather conditions and your activity level. For colder conditions or low-energy activities, opt for jackets with more insulation. For milder temperatures or high-energy activities, a less insulated jacket or a shell jacket may be more suitable.

Fit:

The fit of your snow jacket is crucial for comfort and freedom of movement. Look for jackets that provide a snug fit without restricting your movement, allowing you to layer underneath as needed.

Snowboard / Ski Jackets FAQ

1. What is the purpose of a snow ski jacket? A snow ski jacket is designed to keep you warm, dry, and protected from the elements while skiing or engaging in other winter sports. They are typically waterproof, windproof, and breathable, with insulation for added warmth.
2. What should I look for when buying a snow ski jacket? When buying a snow ski jacket, consider factors such as breathability, waterproofing, insulation, and fit. Additionally, look for features like ventilation, pockets, and adjustable cuffs and hoods for added functionality and comfort.
3. How should a snow ski jacket fit? A snow ski jacket should fit snugly but not restrict your movement. It should be long enough to cover your hips, with sleeves that reach your wrists when your arms are extended. There should be enough room for layering without feeling too bulky.
4. How do I care for my snow ski jacket? To care for your snow ski jacket, follow the manufacturer's care instructions, which typically involve machine washing on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent and air drying. Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach, as these can damage the jacket's waterproofing and breathability.
5. Do I need a separate ski jacket for different weather conditions? A versatile ski jacket with a removable insulation layer or a shell jacket can be adapted to various weather conditions by adjusting the layers underneath. However, it's a good idea to have a backup option for extreme cold or wet conditions.
6. What is the difference between a ski jacket and a snowboard jacket? There is no difference, only in style.
7. Can I wear a regular winter jacket for snowboarding and skiing? While it's possible to wear a regular winter jacket for skiing / snowboarding, a dedicated ski jacket will offer better protection, breathability, and functionality designed specifically for the sport.
8. How often should I replace my snowboard / ski jacket? The lifespan of a ski jacket depends on factors such as quality, frequency of use, and proper care. Generally, a well-maintained, high-quality ski jacket can last for several seasons.
