We did not start making hoodies because the world needed another hoodie with a logo on it.

We started making them because, just like with our T-shirts, we are fairly particular about how we want one to feel.

We like some weight in the fabric. A hood that has enough structure to sit properly. Rib that does not give up after a few months. And a relaxed fit that looks intentional rather than just looking like you bought the wrong size.

That is the basis of the hoodies and sweaters in our Behind The Pines collection.

We like weight

A heavier sweatshirt just wears differently.

It hangs better, keeps its shape and has enough substance to work as an outer layer when the weather is mild.

Our Delta Hoodie is probably the clearest version of that idea. We made it from 450 gsm cotton with an unbrushed loopback interior and a custom oversized, drop-shoulder fit. It is designed and made in the Netherlands.

450 gsm is heavy.

That is deliberate.

But we did not want the inside to be heavily brushed and fluffy. Loopback terry keeps the fabric more breathable and makes the hoodie easier to wear through a much bigger part of the year.

Heavy does not have to mean winter-only.

Oversized, but with a shape

There is a difference between making something oversized and simply making it too big.

We prefer the first.

More room through the body, dropped shoulders and heavier fabric give the garment its silhouette. But the neckline, cuffs, hem and overall length still need to make sense.

That is why we develop the fit rather than just taking a standard hoodie and sizing it up.

If you normally prefer a relaxed silhouette, take your normal size and let the garment fit the way it was designed.

Hoodie or crewneck?

Most days it is just personal preference.

A crewneck is cleaner and usually easier underneath a jacket. There is less material around the neck and nothing bunching up behind you.

A hoodie is a little more casual and adds some extra protection when the weather changes.

We wear both.

A crewneck over one of our T-Shirts is about as straightforward as it gets. A heavyweight hoodie can take the place of a light jacket for a large part of spring and autumn.

Made close to home

Some of our own pieces, including the Delta Hoodie, are produced here in the Netherlands.

We like that for obvious reasons, but local production is not something we want to use as a nice sentence and then forget about.

It gives us more control over how a garment is made, allows us to work much closer to the people producing it and makes smaller, more considered production possible.

For our own collection, that matters.

We would rather develop fewer things properly than fill a collection because a new season has started.

Built to get better through use

A heavyweight cotton sweatshirt should not feel disposable.

Wear it.

Take it travelling. Throw it in the back of the car. Put it on after surfing. Wear it under a shell on a cold morning. Wash it and wear it again.

Cotton changes with use. The surface softens, colours settle and eventually the garment starts feeling properly yours.

That is fine with us.

We are much more interested in how something looks after a year of regular wear than how perfect it looks when it first comes out of a plastic bag.

Keep the care simple

You do not need a complicated routine.

Wash cooler when possible, turn printed pieces inside out and avoid repeatedly cooking heavy cotton in a hot dryer.

Heavy fabrics take longer to dry anyway.

Give them a little time and they will generally keep their shape much better.

And always check the individual care label, especially as different products in the collection may use different materials.

From Behind The Pines

Behind The Pines started as a shop before it became a clothing label.

We spend a lot of time handling products from companies that have been making clothing for decades. You learn from that.

You notice when a fabric is good. When a collar is wrong. When a hoodie looks great on a hanger but loses its shape after six months.

Making our own collection gives us the opportunity to take those observations and make the pieces we want to have in our own wardrobe.

Sometimes that becomes technical merino or snowboard equipment.

Here, it is simply a good hoodie or sweater.
