These are not part of a three-layer mountaineering system and they are not waterproof. The nylon shells shrug off wind and a light shower; the fleece and pile pullovers are warmth on their own or a mid-layer under something else. If you need genuine waterproofing for Dutch winter rain, buy a hardshell and keep the Gramicci as the layer underneath.

Fleece and pile

The pile jackets use a long-fibre fleece that traps a lot of air for its weight. They breathe well and dry fast, which makes them good for moving in the cold. They are also not windproof at all — the wind goes straight through — so they want a shell over the top on an exposed day.

Start with what you are protecting against. Wind and drizzle on the bike or a city walk: nylon shell. Cold, dry, and moving: fleece or pile. Mild, and you want a layer with structure over a tee: the cotton chore jackets. Nothing in this range is the answer to a full day of cold rain, and we would rather say that than sell you the wrong thing.

On size: Gramicci runs to Asian sizing, so most people take one size up from their usual European size. Because the jackets are already cut roomy, sizing up twice usually gives you something that looks borrowed. One up is the safe move.
