Vans MTE at Behind The Pines Amsterdam

MTE stands for Mountain Edition, and it is the part of the Vans range that makes sense in a country where it rains sideways from October to March. Same silhouettes you already know, rebuilt underneath for cold and wet.

This is the deepest part of the Vans range we carry, and the one we get asked about most.

What changes in an MTE

Four things, and they are all structural rather than cosmetic.

The outsole is the biggest one. A standard Vans waffle sole is designed to grip griptape, which is a very different problem from gripping a wet Amsterdam cobble. MTE uses a lugged pattern in a compound that stays flexible in the cold, and that is what stops the shoe from being a liability in January.

The upper is either treated, sealed or built with a full GORE-TEX membrane depending on the model. The lining adds warmth. And the construction around the collar and tongue is closed up to keep water from coming in where the shoe flexes.

Water-resistant or waterproof

This is the distinction worth getting right before you order. The GORE-TEX models are genuinely waterproof: a membrane, sealed. The rest are water-resistant, which handles rain and slush but will let go in standing water. Both are a large step up from canvas. The product page states which is which, and it is worth reading.

The Crosspath and the more technical end

Some MTE models push further from the skate roots than others. The Crosspath XC sits closest to a proper outdoor shoe while still reading as Vans, and it is one of our better sellers for exactly that reason. We wrote about it in the Vans MTE Crosspath XC.

How to choose

Start with when you will wear them. If this is your daily shoe through a Dutch autumn and winter, go GORE-TEX and accept the reduced breathability. If you want something that handles rain but is mostly worn in shoulder seasons, the water-resistant models are more comfortable and cheaper.

Then consider fit. Vans classics run slightly narrow through the toe box. The MTE builds are generally a little more accommodating because of the lining and construction, so if you have wider feet these are often the more comfortable option in the range.

Are they warm enough for snow?

For walking around in cold weather, yes. For a full day standing in snow, a proper winter boot is the better choice.
