Opinel N°08 Outdoor Blue

The Opinel N°08 Outdoor in Earth / Blue adapts the familiar No. 8 size for hiking, sailing, mountaineering and other situations where rope, wet weather and compact emergency functions matter. It combines a reinforced polymer handle, partly serrated stainless blade, shackle key and integrated whistle in one purposeful folding tool.

The 8.5 cm martensitic stainless-steel blade is 2.5 mm thick and includes a 3.5 cm serrated section. That serration helps cut natural or synthetic cord cleanly, while the smooth edge remains useful for controlled general cutting. A shackle key integrated into the blade is sized for 4–10 mm shackles, making the model particularly relevant around sailing and rope systems.

The fibreglass-reinforced polymer handle is built to tolerate shocks, water and temperatures from -40°C to +80°C. Its shaped surface gives dependable purchase with damp hands. At the rear, a pea-less 110 dB emergency whistle is designed to work in poor weather and has an indicated range of roughly 300 metres in open space. Those features add practical backup without turning the knife into a bulky multitool.

A rotating Virobloc safety ring locks the blade open for use and closed for transport. Set it deliberately every time; the ring supports safer handling but does not replace good technique. Keep fingers away from the folding path, cut away from the body and use the correct specialist equipment for climbing protection, rescue or load-bearing applications.

The blue accents keep the technical design visible without looking loud. It suits an outdoor kit where low weight and a few well-chosen functions are more useful than dozens of small tools. It is not intended for prying, batoning or electrical work.

After use, rinse away dirt or salt carefully, dry the blade, joint and Virobloc, and store the knife closed. Stainless steel is corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof; prolonged salt water, acids and detergent can still leave damage. Sharpen the plain section normally and maintain the serration with a tool intended for serrated edges.
