Opinel Néo7 Alpine Glacier Blue

The Opinel Néo7 Alpine Glacier Blue is a 41-gram mountain tool developed for climbing, ski touring, mountaineering and ice climbing, where compact dimensions and useful functions matter more than bulk. Its bright Glacier Blue handle combines reinforced polypropylene, a cork grip zone, an integrated whistle and a bit-holder slot around an 8 cm serrated stainless blade.

The 8 cm serrated blade is made from martensitic stainless steel rated by Opinel at 55–57 HRC. An opening eye reduces weight and helps access the blade in difficult conditions. When closed, the slightly exposed tip can serve as a small scraper. The serration is intended for fibrous material and cord; use a specialist tool for load-bearing rope and never rely on a knife as climbing protection.

Instead of the traditional Virobloc, the Néo7 uses the non-locking OPIFLEX® retention system. It holds the blade open or closed through spring pressure and allows a fluid, intuitive motion, but it is not a positive lock. Keep pressure away from the spine, cut under control and understand this distinction before use.

The 30% fibreglass-reinforced polypropylene handle resists demanding conditions, while the cork section adds warmth and grip. A lanyard hole sits in the OPIFLEX ring, a whistle is built into the rear and a slot for a standard screwdriver bit becomes accessible when the blade is closed. The bit itself is not listed as included.

This is the right Opinel for a lightweight technical pack rather than a traditional picnic basket. Its functions are carefully chosen for mountain movement, small adjustments and emergency signalling. At 41 grams it disappears easily into a pocket, yet the 8 cm blade still offers a useful working length.

Rinse dirt carefully, dry the blade and mechanism fully and keep salt, acids and detergent from remaining on the steel. Maintain the serration with an appropriate sharpener and inspect the retention action before each trip. Store closed and keep it away from children.
